Amos

Amos, one of the greatest preachers of Israel was a shepherd herdsman and caretaker of sycamore trees. Even though he was from the Southern Kingdom, his ministry was to the Northern Kingdom. His brief ministry was in 750.

He announced doom on the Northern Kingdom and its king, Jersboam, which led to the accusation of treason. He denounced the rich who exploited the poor through lending practices, fines and bribing judges. Amos proclaimed a God of righteousness who judges people and nations. What He seeks of his people is unfailing justice in their relationships with one another.

The Baptism of our Lord 

The medallion of the baptism of our Lord is one of eight scenes above the high altar depicting major events in the life and ministry of Christ. Through his baptism, Jesus symbolically tells us that he identifies with us and all humanity. Jesus is seen standing in the Jordan as John the Baptist pours water over him. Our Lord is described as "My Son, The Beloved, with whom I am well pleased." (Matthew 3:17)

Beginnings

The Children's Window 

"Our Lord Blessing the Children" is the title for this window. Installed in 1972, it seeks to express Christ's love for children. "Let the children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs." (Mark 10:14)   

This window was given in memory of Milton T. Lewis.

The Story of Creation 

The first chapter of Genesis reveals God as the creator of all things. God rejoices in His creation and calls it good. This portion of the creation window shows the birds, plants, trees, water and fish. And God said, “‘Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures and let birds fly above the earth across the firmament of the heavens.’ So God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.” The creation is a gift to be enjoyed. Such joy will inform our care of the creation. (Genesis 1:20-21)

The Crucifixion of Our Lord 

This depiction of the crucifixion is one of eight scenes depicting the life of Our Lord. It is set as the central focus of the window and is directly above the altar. On either side of the crucified Jesus are Mary the Mother of Our Lord and John the Beloved Disciple who, along with the angels at Jesus' feet are in an attitude of adoration. The soldiers look on in wonder. 

The window was dedicated Palm Sunday, 1948 in memory of Canon and Mrs. Frear. Canon Frear was the first priest to serve St. Andrew's.

Deborah 

Deborah was a judge, a prophet, and a military leader in twelfth century B.C. Israel. She rendered legal decisions and led Israel to victory over the Canaanite forces. Deborah's victory with Barak, her general, is recorded in Judges, chapters four and five. The Song of Deborah is one of the oldest examples of Biblical literature (ca. 1125 B.C.). This window depicts the victory song of Deborah, the leadership of Deborah and Barak in battle, and the role of Deborah as judge. She is rightly honored for her sacrificial contributions as a leader of Israel.

Elijah’s Triumph Over The Priests of Baal 

This portion of a larger window describes the dramatic contest between God’s prophet, Elijah, and the priests of Baal at Mount Carmel. Elijah invites the Baal priests to build an altar and place wood on it and a sacrifice and then to pray to their god to set fire to the offering. The priests of Baal agree and seek to offer the sacrifice. They pray to Baal, cry out to him, dance about the altar and mutilate themselves, but nothing happens. Elijah rebuilds the altar of the Lord at Mount Carmel, places wood on it and the sacrifice. He then has enough water poured on it that it fills two trenches around the altar. He prays to God, who sends fire to consume the offering. “When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said, ‘The Lord indeed is God; the Lord indeed is God.’ “ (I Kings 18:20-39)

David the Shepherd 

This figure of David as shepherd is part of a larger window depicting the life of David. David is shown playing a harp with his faithful sheep. (Psalm 23)

 This window was given by the Dunn Family in loving memory of Kevin Patrick Dunn.

The Entrance into Jerusalem with Palms 

This scene above the high altar is one of eight which depict the life and ministry of Christ. Jesus is depicted as entering Jerusalem riding on a donkey. The people wave their palm branches both as a symbol of messianic expectation and a way of honoring Christ. 

The window was dedicated Palm Sunday, 1948 in grateful appreciation for the years of devoted service by the first priest and his wife, Canon and Mrs. Frear.

Hannah Presents Samuel to Eli the Priest 

This window depicts the moment when Hannah gives her son, Samuel, to Eli for the Lord's service. In the opening chapters of the book of First Samuel the touching story is told of Hannah's deep desire to have children. Even though she is greatly loved and cherished by her husband, Elkanah, her longing is for a child. Each year Hannah and Elkanah would go to Shiloh to offer sacrifice and worship God. Hannah uses this opportunity to pour out her heart to God. She prays for a son whom she will consecrate and give for the Lord's service. So ardent are her prayers, so deep her sorrow, so intense are her emotions that Eli the priest believes she is intoxicated. He tells her to stop drinking, but Hannah replies, "No, my Lord, I am a woman deeply troubled; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord"…"I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation all this time." (I Samuel 1:15) Eli answers her that God will answer her prayer. He does. Hannah and Elkanah have a son, Samuel. He is given by them for God's service and to Eli. He eventually succeeds Eli as prophet and priest. Each pledge we make is like Samuel, an offering of ourselves for God's work in this place and throughout the Church.

The Great Window above the High Altar 

The Great Window above the High Altar of St. Andrew’s is filled with symbolism. At the very top of the window, the crown, lamb and dove represent the Holy Trinity. The Α and the Ω symbolize the eternal Christ, the Beginning and the End through all ages. The six angels are the heavenly hosts who worship God ceaselessly. The medallions depict the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Baptism of our Lord by John the Baptist, the Transfiguration, Our Lord’s entrance into Jerusalem known as Palm Sunday, The Lord’s Supper or First Eucharist, the Crucifixion and the Resurrection. The small half rounds contain symbols of the Holy Apostles. The Willet Company considers this to be one of the finest windows made by its studios. 

The window was dedicated Palm Sunday, 1948 in memory of Canon Frear, the first priest to serve St. Andrew’s.

The Intimate Ministry 

This window describes ministry to various individuals and is known as “The Intimate Ministry”. In the upper right panel Jesus promises living water to the woman at the well (John 4). In the middle panel Jesus is at the home of Mary and Martha of Bethany. It is here that he reveals “There is only one thing needed:“ to hear the Word of God who is Jesus (Luke 10:38-42). The lower section depicts Timothy being taught and nurtured in the faith by his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice (II Timothy 1:5). In the upper left panel Jesus blesses the children of every race and nationality (Mark 10:13-15). The window below shows Jesus with Nicodemus, who comes to Jesus in the night. Jesus tells him he must be born anew (John 3:1-21). The lower panel depicts Hannah giving her long-awaited son Samuel to the service of God in the temple. The young Samuel is received by the priest Eli and matures to become a prophet of whom the scriptures tell us, “The Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground” (I Samuel 1:1-28; quote from I Samuel 3:19).

Isaiah 

This window depicts the purification and the commissioning of the prophet Isaiah as described in Isaiah 6:1-13, one of the great passages of Scripture. Isaiah has a dramatic vision of the glory of God enthroned in heaven. He responds, “Woe is me! for…I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!” As a symbol of absolution and to purify Isaiah, an angel takes a burning coal with tongs from the altar and touches Isaiah’s lips with the words “Your guilt is taken away and you are forgiven.” Only then is Isaiah commissioned to be a spokesperson for God.

The Lord's Supper 

The Lord's Supper, or The Last Supper, is one of eight scenes above the high altar depicting major events in the life and ministry of Christ. The dominant figure in this scene is clearly our Lord who holds the chalice in his left hand and invites the disciples with his right hand to receive "the cup of salvation." Christ continues to feed his disciples every Sunday in the Eucharist with his Body and Blood, thus making this scene a living reality in human hearts and lives.

The Parable of the Lost Sheep 

Our Lord told this parable in response to the criticism that he received sinners and ate with them. It is the work of the shepherd to leave the ninety-nine sheep and search in the wilderness for the one who is lost and bring it back to the fold. He then calls his friends together for a party so they may “rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep who was lost.” (Luke 15:1-7)     

This window was given as an act of Thanksgiving by Robert and Mary Dengler.

Saint Andrew

The scenes in these windows focus on St. Andrew, the patron of our parish. The left window depicts Andrew leading a boy with loaves and fishes to Christ in preparation for the feeding of the five thousand (St. John 6). This event introduces a long discourse on Jesus as the bread of life and is clearly Eucharistic. This window is given in loving memory of Chet and Libby Richer by their families. 

The scene in the right window is from St. John 12:20-26 and visually depicts Andrew bringing two Greeks to Christ, symbolizing ministry to the Gentiles and the evangelical mission of the Church. This window is given in loving memory of Mildred Adams Lucey by her nephew Donald Lucey and his wife Shirley. 

These windows were dedicated on November 5, 2006, All Saints' Sunday.

The Parable of the Sower and the Seed 

This is a parable about the destiny of the Word of God in the world. The Word proclaimed is like a sower spreading seed. Some of the seed fell by the side and birds ate it; some fell on a rock and sprung up only to die from a lack of soil and moisture; some fell among thorns which choked it; but some fell on good soil and grew a hundred fold. The parable explains the growth promised in the early church. (Luke 8:4-18)

Paul’s Vision on the Damascus Road 

This window depicts the conversion and calling of St. Paul. The future apostle was on his way to Damascus to initiate a persecution of Christians when he was struck by a great light from heaven. He fell from his horse. Our Lord asked Paul, “Saul, Saul why do you persecute me?” Paul, now temporarily blinded, is told to go to Damascus where he will be told what he must do; namely, become an apostle of Jesus. (Acts 9:1-9)

The Te Deum Window 

This lancet is part of a greater window depicting Christ as King surrounded by many saints from all ages of the Church's history. Here we see The Right Reverend Charlie F. McNutt, Jr. recently retired bishop of The Diocese of Central Pennsylvania, vested in rochet and chimere. Much loved by the people of St. Andrew's, he has an honored place in both this window and the hearts of our people. Next to him is Bernard Mizeki who was converted to Christianity by an Anglican priest. Bernard, a devout layperson was a catechist and teacher. He was martyred during a native uprising. He carries the martyr's palms. To his right is Father James DeKoven, renewer of the worship, sacramental and missionary life of this Church. A great preacher, scholar and educator, he led the Church in a greater appreciation for the Holy Eucharist.

Samuel Seabury, Absalom Jones and Jackson Kemper 

This panel is part of a large window celebrating the ascended Lord in glory surrounded by his saints. The figure on the left with a crozier depicts Samuel Seabury, the first American Bishop. Consecrated by the Episcopal Church of Scotland on November 14, 1784, he served as Bishop of Connecticut until his death in 1796. 

The center figure, Absalom Jones, is the first African-American priest in this Church. Born a slave, he purchased his and Mrs. Jones' freedom and founded a congregation in Philadelphia as well as the Free African Society. Jones' congregation, St. Thomas Church, was received into the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania in 1794. He was ordained a deacon in 1799 and a priest on September 21, 1802. "His constant visiting and mild manner made him beloved by his own flock and by the community." 

The figure on the right is Jackson Kemper, the first missionary Bishop in the United States. Consecrated bishop in 1835, his missionary efforts took him to Indiana, Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Nebraska and Kansas. An indefatigable worker, he founded Nashotah House Seminary and Racine College both in Wisconsin. Bishop Kemper is honored by the title, "The Bishop of the Whole Northwest." 

The panel was given by George and Annie Harvey in memory of their parents, Hester and Harry Campbell and Hazel and George Harvey. This window was dedicated Pentecost 1998 and blessed by Bishop McNutt during a visit to St. Andrew's on the Second Sunday of Advent, December 6,1998.

Te Deum Window - Christ the King 

This window depicts Christ the King, who in the words of the Te Deum "has overcome the sharpness of death." He is shown reigning in triumph wearing a crown and with a cross-topped orb in his hand. This representation of Christ as King is from the Book of the Revelation, Chapter 4, verses 1-3. Under Christ's feet is his symbol, "The Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world", bearing the banner of victory over death. 

This window is a gift of Elinor Chamberlain and her family in memory of her husband Stuart Chamberlain. The window was dedicated Pentecost 1998 and blessed by The Right Reverend Charlie F. McNutt, Jr. on the Second Sunday in Advent 1998.

The Young Timothy with Eunice and Lois

This window depicts St. Timothy as a youth praying with his mother Eunice and
Grandmother Lois; women whom St. Paul commends as models of sincere and deep
Faith II Timothy 1:5

The Transfiguration

The Transfiguration of our Lord is depicted in this scene above the high altar. The disciples Peter, James and John hide their eyes while Jesus is encountered by the Father. The voice from the cloud says “This is my Son, The Beloved, with Him I am well pleased; listen to Him.” Jesus tells the disciples, “Get up and do not Be afraid.” The scene is one of eight depicting our Lord’s life in the window above The high altar.
